Successful Day of Phone and Safe, In-Person Sales

Attics to BasementsFriday, March 20, we resumed operations after a one-week hiatus during which we worked diligently to develop an appropriate response to the COVID-19 crisis. As described in prior communications, our new process involves (i) restricting the number of shoppers in a house to no more than 10 at any time, and (ii) encouraging shoppers to browse our extensive gallery of online pictures and then purchase via telephone.

We have a number of initial observations from our first day operating under this format:

  1. Our shoppers are highly attuned to the crisis, focused on the safety and health of themselves and others, and terrific at adhering to the guidelines of the CDC, Dallas County Health And Human Services, and other governmental authorities. The attitude at the sale was notably upbeat and at-ease given the whirlwind taking place in world health.
  2. By limiting the number of people in the house, shoppers enjoyed a highly relaxed and comfortable shopping environment. There was more time for item discovery, Q&A with the Attics to Basements team about merchandise, and friendly chit-chat with other shoppers.
  3. Online browsing and phone purchasing was a hit. A significant portion of sales came over the phone along with detailed product inquiries that led shoppers to come to the house to inspect the item before deciding whether to purchase.
  4. Expanding our target market to include both in-person and online shoppers created an oxymoron—we reached more potential buyers and created a more relaxed and engaging environment. We prepared ourselves for a number of possible outcomes including the possibility of an enormous drop in activity at the sale, but instead experienced a pleasant and productive day.

There is no substitute for an in-person shopping experience at an Attics to Basements Estate Sale. The ability to shop and inspect merchandise in person, walk through new neighborhoods and homes, socialize with other shoppers, and interact with the Attics to Basements crew provides an unmatched and rewarding experience. And, we are now adding remote shopping capabilities for those shoppers who prefer the convenience and comfort of browsing and shopping from home. It has been only one day, but we are working to make this an improved model in the "new normal" of today's world.
